Recommended Computer Specifications |
Type: Top notebook brands include DELL (good warranty support), Sony, HP, Toshiba and others. A number of agents have had difficulty or performance issues with Compaq - now owned by HP. |
Processor: The newer i-5 processor is ideal, however an Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor (also 64-Bit Capable) will also operate in well in the Windows 7 environment. If buying a used notebook, avoid purchasing a machine that has an Intel Celeron or AMD Duron processor. These are economical but tend to perform poorly in a network environment. |
Operating System: Preferred currently is either Windows 7 or windows XP Professional, Windows Vista continues to have a number of difficult issues in the network environment. |
Hard Disk Drive: Both size and speed are worth considering. Most notebook computers come with a 5200 RPM hard disk drive and some offer the option of upgrading the HDD to a 7200 RPM drive and some now go to 10,000RPM. Some manufacturers also offer a more expense solid state drive. The HDD is often a speed bottleneck, so the difference in a 5200 and 7200 RPM drive may be worthwhile. Typically 200-250 GB offers sufficient space, but many of the high speed drives will offer increased capacities up to a terabyte. |
RAM: (Random Access Memory) - 2MB is quickly becoming the bare minimum, and 4GB-6MB is a good standard. If you choose plan to upgrade the memory later on, it would be best to specify a single chip, leaving space for a second chip should you decide to upgrade later. |
Network: Most notebooks come with a built in 802.11g or new 802.11n wireless adapter (support both b and g and n standards). The fast 802.11a has not caught on well since access points in offices and other locations typically use 802.11g. A 100BaseT plug port should also be available on system. Also, (a luxury) T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and other cellular providers offer reasonably fast connections using an "air Card" which many vender sell as an internal add-on USB, internal card or a PCMCIA card that gives internet access anywhere there is cell phone access. These are typically used by those who travel a lot. |
Display: The size of the display may be less important than the resolution. Older 800x600 resolutions are no longer adequate to maximize the view of more recently designed web pages. Your screen should be cable of resolutions of at least 1280x768, ideally 1280 x 1024, and 1680 x 1050 (+/-) or greater. |
WebCam and
Microphone: Your notebook should come with a built in webcam and microphone which
make SKYPE and video communications possible.
Warranty: A 3 year warranty is ideal, but not much use if you are required to send off your computer for a couple of weeks. The on-site warranties are best when you’re someone who relies on your computer and can’t afford to give it up for a week. |
